Future Consultants - Arise!

The consulting industry is an incredibly varied and fast-paced field with specialities ranging from strategy to finance, engineering, human resources, environmental, digital and corporate advisory companies. By definition, consulting is defined as “the practice of providing a third party with expertise on a matter in exchange for a fee.” These services could either be advisory or implemented with the ultimate aim of supporting companies in becoming more sustainable in the future (www.Consultancy.uk). The core professional skills utilised by a consultant are: numerical, attention to detail, analytical, interpersonal, teamwork, IT, oral/written communication, tact and commercial awareness.

As a consultant you are presented with many career opportunities which can be very rewarding in many ways. You could be employed by international consultancy firms, professional services firms or strategy sections of financial organisations such as accounting. Within a consulting firm you could have general consultants who cover a greater breadth of services, or specialist consultant offering a niche business service such as strategy or IT. Regardless of the type, all consultants are heavily sought out by organisations from both private and public sectors, who seek help and advice about their complex and ever-changing business and policy issues. Top employers include: PWC, KPMG, Deloitte, Adelphi, McCann Health and many more.

That being said, the transition from academia to consulting can be challenging, especially when lacking relevant professional experience. Moreover, entry level roles at large firms are extremely competitive and it is often difficult to stand out in a crowd of equally qualified peers. Fortunately, the NBI is here to help you through this process!
